From Katraj to Hinjawadi: Pune’s First Electric Double-Decker Bus Trial Completed
Pune, 16th September 2025: In a step towards easing Pune’s growing traffic congestion, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) conducted a successful trial run of its newly procured electric double-decker bus today. The trial was carried out on the Katraj Depot–Hinjawadi route in the presence of PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Deore.
The new service is aimed primarily at IT professionals working in Pune’s major hubs such as Hinjawadi, Kharadi, and Magarpatta. PMPML has procured the bus from Switch Mobility, a Chennai-based company. Each bus costs around ₹2 crore and offers a seating capacity of 85 passengers—45 on the lower deck and 40 on the upper deck. For passenger safety, the buses are equipped with CCTV cameras for full monitoring. After a full charge, the bus runs for 150 km.
Speaking on the occasion, Deore said, “We will conduct trials on four routes over the next 10 to 15 days. Once trials are successful on all routes, and after completing all administrative procedures, our aim is to launch the double-decker bus service for Pune citizens by Diwali. We plan to equip the buses with wifi for passengers. Also, there will be no increase in fares.”
PMPML officials said the introduction of electric double-deckers is expected to improve public transport capacity while promoting eco-friendly commuting in the city.
