Pune, 5th January 2026: An initiative aimed at bringing positive change in the lives of young men and women from slum areas and making them self-reliant, the ‘Lighthouse Project’, implemented by Pune BJP election in-charge and Ward 24-D candidate Ganesh Bidkar, is emerging as a ray of hope for many. The project focuses on identifying and nurturing the skills of youth who, due to lack of formal education, are deprived of employment opportunities, and integrating them into the mainstream workforce.

Many youths living in slum pockets are unable to complete their education due to financial constraints. However, despite limited academic qualifications, they often possess inherent skills, talent and a strong willingness to work. Keeping this reality in mind, Bidkar launched the Lighthouse Project in 2021 with the objective of enhancing these skills, creating employment opportunities and building confidence among youth so that they can stand on their own feet like others.

The project was initiated at a municipal school in Bholagiri, Somwar Peth, and has since benefited youths from slum areas in Kasba Peth, Mangalwar Peth, Rasta Peth, Nana Peth and Ganesh Peth. Employment generation at the community level remains the core objective of the initiative. Youths between the ages of 18 and 30 are provided with intensive one-month training programmes aimed at helping them turn their career aspirations into reality and secure a sustainable livelihood for themselves and their families.

Between 2021 and 2025, over 1,500 youths have undergone training under the Lighthouse Project, with more than 550 successfully securing jobs. These figures are being cited as indicators of the project’s effectiveness and impact.

Before enrolling candidates for training, the project conducts career aptitude tests to assess individual interests, abilities, aptitude and personality traits. Based on this assessment, participants are guided towards suitable vocational courses. Training under the project includes courses in Tally, computer operations, tailoring, beauty and wellness, healthcare, gym instruction, nursing assistance, cooking, graphic design and various software languages, among others.

According to organisers, the emphasis on quality and demand-driven training has significantly improved the standard of living for many youths from slum areas. The initiative has also helped steer several young people away from crime and negative influences, enabling them to build meaningful careers and work towards a more secure future.

The Lighthouse Project, under the leadership of Ganesh Bidkar, is being seen as a sustained effort towards youth empowerment and social development, bringing a sense of hope and direction to sections of society often left on the margins.
