Ganesh Visarjan: Doctors Warn Against Health Risks of Loud Music and Laser Lights
Pune, 6th September 2025: As Ganesh Visarjan processions take over Pune with drums, DJs, and dazzling laser shows, health experts have raised concerns about the growing use of high-decibel sound and artificial lighting. Ophthalmologists and ENT (ear-nose-throat) specialists caution that such exposure can cause long-term damage to hearing and vision.
According to ENT experts, sound levels above 85 decibels can harm the eardrum and lead to serious complications. “Excessive noise directly affects hearing. People often complain of ringing in the ears, reduced hearing, or temporary deafness after the procession. Continuous exposure to such high noise can even result in permanent hearing loss over the years,” said Dr. Rahul Telang, ENT specialist at Sassoon Hospital.
Senior ENT specialist Dr. Shalini Saxena added that the safe limit for prolonged exposure is 70 decibels or less. “Noise above this level can cause headaches, irritability, and even sudden hearing loss. If treated within a week, recovery is possible in nearly 70 percent of cases.
However, prolonged exposure increases the risk of permanent deafness. If headphones are necessary, always keep the volume low,” she advised.
Ophthalmologists are equally concerned about the use of laser lights in processions. “Laser beams directly affect the retina, leading to eye irritation, blurred vision, watery eyes, and pain. Prolonged exposure may even cause vision loss. Last year, a young man lost his eyesight due to laser exposure,” said Dr. Anil Dudhabhate, eye specialist.
He warned that children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing eye conditions are especially vulnerable.
Doctors have issued simple precautionary guidelines for citizens attending the processions:
Avoid looking directly at laser lights.
Keep young children away from bright and flashing lights.
Use earplugs or cotton to reduce noise exposure.
Consult a specialist immediately if you experience red eyes, vision problems, ringing in the ears, or hearing difficulties.
While the grandeur of Ganesh Visarjan brings joy to lakhs of devotees, experts stress the need for mindful celebration to ensure the festival does not leave behind lasting health problems.
