GBS Outbreak: Pune’s Guillain-Barré Cases Rise to 158; WHO Assists in Investigation

Pune, 3rd February 2025: The number of patients undergoing treatment for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Pune has climbed to 158, with nine new cases reported on Sunday, according to the health department’s latest update. No additional fatalities have been recorded, keeping the total death toll at five.
In a positive development, the number of patients requiring ventilator support decreased from 28 on Saturday to 21 on Sunday. ICU admissions also saw a decline, dropping from 83 to 48. Doctors treating GBS patients reported encouraging recovery trends, with 38 individuals having been discharged so far.
Health officials investigating the spike in GBS cases are receiving assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO), which is helping the district administration analyze data to track the emergence and spread of the disease.
A WHO official stated that their teams had visited several affected areas in the city and were working closely with local authorities to train healthcare workers in proactive case identification. “Our teams are providing technical expertise and on-the-ground support to state and district-level health officials, ensuring that every suspected case is promptly diagnosed and treated,” said Dr. Roderico H Ofrin, WHO’s representative to India.
