Fifth Death Due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Pune, Cases Rise to 149

Pune, 2nd February 2025: A 60-year-old man from Nanded Gaon, who was undergoing treatment for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) at Sassoon General Hospital, passed away early Saturday, marking the fifth fatality linked to the condition in Pune.
The patient, who also had hypertension, was admitted to the hospital on January 16. He succumbed at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday due to respiratory failure caused by complications from GBS, doctors confirmed.
“The patient arrived in critical condition with paralysis affecting all four limbs. His GBS diagnosis was confirmed, and he was immediately placed on ventilator support,” said a senior hospital official. “Despite administering intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, antibiotics, and plasmapheresis, his condition deteriorated, and he could not be saved.”
Meanwhile, the number of GBS cases in Pune continues to climb. As of Saturday, nine new patients were admitted, bringing the total number of cases in the city to 149. Among these, 82 patients are from the newly merged city areas.
According to a health department report, the number of critically ill patients has also surged. Currently, 83 patients are in intensive care units (up from 45 on Friday), and 28 require ventilator support (an increase from 18). So far, 38 individuals have recovered and been discharged.
Doctors highlighted that the deceased patient had experienced severe diarrhea for a week before being hospitalized.
“Delayed medical attention often worsens GBS outcomes. Early intervention with appropriate treatment can improve recovery chances,” a health expert said.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to seek medical help if they experience symptoms such as muscle weakness, tingling sensations, or difficulty breathing.
