Pune: PMC Intensifies Crackdown on Fake Doctors; 56 Cases Registered Since 2013

Pune, 1st August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has stepped up its drive against unqualified medical practitioners, with 56 criminal cases registered against alleged fake doctors across the city between 2013 and 2026. The civic body has now directed officials to review all previous cases and verify whether those booked have resumed illegal medical practice.

The decision was taken during the 22nd meeting of the Committee for Identification and Action Against Bogus Medical Practitioners, held on July 29 under the chairmanship of PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Health Department, Legal Department, Assistant Health Officers, zonal and regional medical officers, and representatives of the police department.

According to the PMC, the campaign aims to curb illegal medical practice that poses a serious threat to public health while also creating awareness among citizens about the importance of seeking treatment only from qualified and registered medical professionals.

During the meeting, officials were instructed to conduct a detailed review of all 56 registered cases and maintain updated records on their current status. The Health Department has also been directed to verify whether any of the accused have resumed operating illegal medical clinics at locations where action had previously been taken.

As part of the ongoing enforcement drive, the PMC’s Bogus Doctors Detection Cell investigated a complaint against an individual identified as K.D.M. Following a legal opinion from the civic body’s Legal Department, a complaint was filed with Kondhwa Police Station, where a case was registered on July 27, 2026.

The civic administration reiterated that only doctors registered with the appropriate medical councils and holding recognised qualifications such as MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BDS, or recognised postgraduate medical degrees are legally authorised to practice medicine.

PMC has appealed to citizens to verify a doctor’s registration and professional qualifications before undergoing treatment and to report suspected cases of illegal medical practice to the authorities. Officials said sustained action against bogus doctors is essential to safeguard public health and ensure that residents receive treatment from qualified medical professionals.
