Gift Fraud: Pune Police Arrest Nigerian Gang For Cheating Elderly Woman Of Rs Four Crore

Pune, 15th July 2021: The Cyber ​​police station of Pune city police has arrested a Nigerian gang from Delhi for swindling Rs four crore from a senior citizen under the pretext of sending a costly gift.

Police have seized 23 mobile handsets, four laptops, one hard disk, five dongles, three pen drives, eight mobile SIM cards, three debit cards, ID cards, and documents were seized from them.

The arrested persons have been identified as Jango Nicolas (29), Monday Oake (26), Paulinus Mbango (29), all citizens of Nigeria, who resided in Delhi. Cyber ​​police squads had been camping in Delhi for the past two weeks and nabbed them on Wednesday evening.

According to police, the 60-year-old complainant had met one of the accused through Facebook. He had been contacted by international phone call and pretended to have sent an expensive gift. Later he made a story that he brought the gift (gold and foreign currency) to India but he has been intercepted at the Delhi airport. The woman started getting calls that it would cost money to clear the parcel, release him and provide medical treatment. The accused forced the woman to deposit Rs 3.98 crore in 67 bank accounts in 25 different banks between September 2020 and March 2021.

The woman had lodged a complaint with the cyber police station after realizing that she had been cheated. When it was found out that the accused was in Delhi, a squad was sent there to arrest.

The action was taken under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW and Cyber Crime) Bhagyashree Navtake, Assistant Commissioner of Police Milind Patil, and Senior Police Inspector DS Hake.

The team included Police Inspector Ankush Chintaman, Sangita Mali, Assistant Police Inspector Ganesh Pawar, Sub-Inspector Arjun Bendgude, and police personnel Aslam Attar, Sandesh Karne, Mangesh Nevse, Yogesh Wavhal, Nitesh Shelar, Pravin Singh Rajput, Shirish Gawde, Prasad Potdar, Amol Kadam, Sandeep Yadav, Shrikant Kabule, Nilam Sable, Ankita Ragho, Uma Palve and Puja Mandale.
