Glass in Bun: Pune’s Iconic Cafe Goodluck Shut for 12 Days, Now Reopens
Shivajinagar, 29th July 2025: Iconic eatery Cafe Goodluck, a nearly 90-year-old establishment on FC Road, has resumed operations after a 12-day shutdown imposed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The closure was triggered after a customer reported finding glass fragments in buns, prompting a swift inspection by authorities.
The incident came to light when a diner posted a video on social media showing pieces of glass inside buns served at the restaurant. Following the viral post, FDA officials conducted an inspection and found multiple hygiene and safety violations, including unsanitary kitchen conditions, blackened walls, and the absence of medical certificates for staff.
“Based on these violations, the restaurant’s license was temporarily suspended on July 14,” confirmed Suresh Annapure, Joint Commissioner of the FDA (Food Department). He added that food samples were collected for testing, and the establishment was asked to rectify the issues before resuming business.
Over the past two weeks, Cafe Goodluck addressed all concerns raised by the FDA. This included deep cleaning the premises, repainting the kitchen, and submitting valid medical certificates for all food handlers. After a follow-up inspection, officials deemed the restaurant fit to operate and allowed it to reopen on Friday, July 25.
“Cafe Goodluck has now complied with all FDA norms, and hence, we have permitted them to resume business,” Annapure said.
In contrast, the Bhiwandi Darbar hotel in Camp remains closed as it has yet to resolve similar FDA violations. “Its license is still suspended until compliance is achieved,” Annapure added.
The incident has reignited discussions on food safety standards and the role of vigilant consumers in holding establishments accountable.
