Govt Ends Amitabh Bachchan’s Cyber Crime Caller Tune After Public Backlash
New Delhi, 26th June 2025: The government has officially discontinued the 40-second cyber crime awareness caller tune voiced by Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, following widespread public complaints and concerns about delays during emergency calls.
Launched in September 2024 by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center under the Union Home Ministry, the caller tune was aimed at spreading awareness about rising incidents of online fraud. It warned users not to share OTP, KYC, or other sensitive bank information with unknown individuals.
Initially praised for its intent, the pre-call message gradually drew criticism for its length and frequency—especially when it played during urgent or emergency calls. Despite reducing its frequency and removing it from emergency numbers like police, ambulance, and fire services, the government has now permanently withdrawn the message.
Backlash reaches Amitabh Bachchan
Superstar Amitabh Bachchan, whose voice featured in the message, also became a target of online trolling. On June 23, he posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Yes, Huzoor I am also a fan.”
In response to a user asking him to “stop speaking on calls,” Bachchan replied:
“Tell the government, brother. I only did what I was asked to.”
This isn’t the first time Bachchan’s voice has courted controversy. During the Covid-19 pandemic, his public health message about wearing masks and sanitization also drew criticism, especially after he and his family members tested positive for the virus. At that time, a PIL was filed in the Delhi High Court demanding removal of his voice from the Covid caller tune.
Caller tunes as awareness tools
In India, caller tunes have been widely used to spread health and safety messages due to high mobile phone penetration, particularly in rural areas where access to internet and television remains limited. However, the prolonged use of such messages—especially during emergencies—has led to public fatigue and backlash.
Cyber crime still a threat
While the caller tune has been turned off, cyber threats remain a major concern. The government continues to advise the public to stay vigilant.
If targeted by fraudsters, citizens should call the helpline 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
The move to discontinue the tune is being seen as a positive step in balancing public awareness with practical communication needs, especially in critical situations.
