Pune, 11th June 2025: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force is set to become the second Indian citizen to travel to space, as part of the upcoming Axiom-4 mission. This international spaceflight, jointly conducted by Axiom Space, NASA, and SpaceX, marks a significant scientific and strategic milestone for India, according to Dr. Leena Bokil, an astrophysicist.

The Axiom-4 mission will include a crew of four astronauts. Following a launch from the United States, the crew is expected to reach the International Space Station (ISS) after a 28-hour journey. During their time aboard the ISS, they will conduct a range of scientific and biomedical experiments, with Group Captain Shukla being entrusted with several key responsibilities.

“Group Captain Shukla has completed all necessary training for space travel,” said Dr. Bokil while speaking about the mission. “His inclusion in this mission is a moment of pride for India. This mission is not only a testament to technological advancement but also a symbol of India’s growing strength in the field of space exploration.”

Shukla’s primary experiments will focus on biological changes in microgravity, sensory testing of space food, and operational studies of advanced technologies. His experience is expected to play a crucial role in India’s future plans for manned space missions.

In a historic context, Group Captain Shukla will become the second Indian to enter space, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard a Soviet mission in 1984.
