Hapus and Kesar Steal the Spotlight as Mango Season Peaks in Pune

By Vikrant Sonawane
Market Yard, 15th May 2025: As the summer heat sets in, so does the fragrance of fresh mangoes in Pune’s bustling Market Yard — and this year, Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus are enjoying top billing among mango lovers. Alongside them, Kesar mangoes are also gaining momentum, setting the tone for a flavorful season ahead.
From Ratnagiri, Devgad, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat, a variety of mangoes — including Hapus, Kesar, Badam, Totapuri, Lalbaugh, and Langda — have begun flooding the wholesale and retail sections of the market.
Devgad Hapus in High Demand, Prices Surge
The wholesale price of Alphonso (Hapus) mangoes is currently ranging between ₹1,600 and ₹2,400 per box, depending on size and quality. Retail prices for Hapus are hovering between ₹400 and ₹600 per dozen, making them a premium pick for mango connoisseurs. Devgad Hapus, in particular, has emerged as a clear favorite.
“Mango lovers are specifically asking for Devgad Hapus this year,” said Khandu Shirke, a veteran mango trader at the Market Yard. “There’s a noticeable shortage in Ratnagiri Hapus supply, and that’s expected to drive prices up further.”
Kesar Mangoes Ready to Dominate Market from May 20
While Hapus continues to dominate, Kesar mangoes from Gujarat are not far behind. Prized for their rich sweetness and vibrant color, Kesar mangoes are expected to take center stage later this month as supply increases.
Currently, wholesale prices for Kesar are between ₹1,600 and ₹1,800 per box, while retail prices range from ₹80 to ₹100 per kilogram. “From the 20th of May, Kesar mangoes will see a major push in the market,” Shirke added. “Supply will rise and so will customer demand.”
Other Varieties Find Space, But Demand Slows
Other mango varieties like Badam, Lalbaugh, and Totapuri are also available in good numbers. The wholesale price for Badam mangoes ranges between ₹1,400 and ₹1,600 per box. However, these varieties are currently taking a backseat as buyers prefer the more premium Hapus and Kesar types.
Despite fluctuating prices and weather challenges in growing regions, the mango season has gotten off to a strong start in Pune. As summer progresses, traders expect a sharp rise in footfall and sales.
“This is just the beginning,” said Shirke. “The real mango rush is yet to come.”
