Heavy Rains Predicted In Hilly Areas Of Pune District, IMD Issues Orange Alert

Pune, 12th June 2021: Due to the formation of a low-pressure area over North West Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood and strengthening of westerlies along the coast, an active rainfall spell is expected over Konkan – Goa and adjoining ghat areas of Central Maharashtra during the next 4-5 days. Pune district is on orange alert.

 

Heavy rains are expected in sparsely populated areas in the Pune district on June 12. Heavy to very heavy rains are forecasted in some places from June 13th to 15th. The farmers have been informed by the agriculture department that torrential rains are likely on June 14 and 15 in sparse places.

IMD has said that locals may face issues such as localized water logging/flooding of informal settlements or roads, the possibility of danger to very old and unmaintained structures, localized disruption to essential municipal services (water, electricity etc), disruption to road, rail, air and ferry transport, damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation.

Mumbai and the Konkan region are expected to have very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next few days.

It must be noted that 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm rainfall is considered Heavy Rainfall while 115.6 mm to 204.5 mm rainfall is known as Very Heavy Rainfall. Lastly, Extremely Heavy Rainfall is that of greater than 204.6 mm.
