Hidden Apps on Smartphones: How to Detect and Delete Them
New Delhi, 6th December 2024: Hidden apps on smartphones can pose a significant threat to users’ privacy and security. Cybercriminals can exploit these apps to install malware, monitor devices, or steal sensitive data. While some users intentionally hide apps for privacy, others might unknowingly have hidden apps on their devices.
The introduction of advanced features in operating systems like iOS 18 has made it easier to hide apps securely, but this also increases the challenge of detecting them. Here’s how to find and delete hidden apps on both iPhones and Android devices.
Detecting Hidden Apps on iPhones:
For Versions Before iOS 18:
Check the App Library: Swipe left from the home screen to access the “App Library.” Apps are categorised here. Use the search bar or scroll to locate the app.
Search Home Screens and Folders: Sometimes apps are tucked away in folders or other home screens. Check carefully.
For iOS 18 and Later:
Hidden Apps in the App Library: Hidden apps protected by Face ID will not appear directly. Locate the hidden apps folder in the App Library. Face ID authentication will be required to access it.
Check the Purchased Section: Go to the “App Store” and check your purchased apps. Hidden apps will still be listed here, allowing you to reinstall or delete them.
Deleting Apps on iPhones:
Press and hold the app icon until it enters “wiggle mode.” Tap the “x” and confirm removal.
For multiple deletions, go to “Settings > General > Storage” and use the “Remove Unused Apps” feature.
Detecting Hidden Apps on Android Devices:
App Drawer Check: Hidden apps won’t appear in the app drawer. Access the “App Vault” and click on “Hidden Apps” in the menu. If no apps are listed, none are hidden.
Settings Search: Open “Settings > Apps” and click “See All Apps.” This will display all installed apps, including hidden ones.
Deleting Apps on Android:
Long press the app icon in the app drawer or home screen, then select “Uninstall” or “Remove.”
Alternatively, go to “Settings > Apps” and select the app to uninstall.
Cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of identifying and managing hidden apps to protect your privacy. Users are advised to enable security features, such as Face ID, Two-Step Verification, or app locks, and to regularly review installed apps. Remaining vigilant can help safeguard against potential cyber threats.
