Hinjawadi Waterlogging: PMRDA Orders Urgent Drainage Fix Along Pune Metro Route

Hinjawadi, 15th June 2025: In response to recurring waterlogging issues during the monsoon in Hinjawadi, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated steps to improve stormwater drainage along the under-construction Metro Line 3 route.

The authority will create wider and more frequent gaps in the central medians of the Metro corridor to allow rainwater to drain more effectively.

The decision comes after recent downpours caused severe flooding in several parts of Hinjawadi, disrupting traffic and raising concerns among commuters and residents.

“Heavy rains exposed several weak points in the drainage setup. Based on feedback from the traffic police, we have decided to incorporate more drainage gaps in the medians to allow water to flow freely,” said PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase.

Dr. Mhase emphasized that the situation required immediate attention. “If rainwater cannot find an outlet, it will stagnate on the roads. We’ve asked the Metro contractor to act swiftly,” he said. The commissioner has also instructed the Metro project’s concessionaire to ensure that all roads, footpaths, and stormwater drains are cleared of construction waste by June 22.

Although ongoing rainfall has slowed progress, PMRDA officials stated that work is underway at multiple points along the stretch. “Gaps have already been opened in certain areas, and trenching work is ongoing to support water drainage,” said an official from the engineering department.

To streamline coordination and speed up response times, the PMRDA has created a dedicated WhatsApp group that includes all key stakeholders. “This group has made it easier for us to flag and address issues like debris accumulation and water stagnation quickly,” Dr. Mhase added.

The PMRDA will submit a detailed report outlining the current challenges and the mitigation measures being taken to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also chairs the regional planning body.

On June 7, heavy rains led to flooding on the MIDC road section between Metro Stations 3 and 4 in Hinjawadi. Waterlogging was reported near the Vilas Javadekar residential complex, Sahyadri Girls Hostel, and various stretches in Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the IT hub.
