Pune, 12th February 2025: Hirkani rooms, which provide a safe and private space for women to breastfeed, will now be established at every primary health center in Pune district, following the model of Hirkani rooms in the Zilla Parishad offices. The Women and Child Welfare Department of the Zilla Parishad has developed a prototype called the ‘Adarsh Hirkani Room’, which will serve as the standard design for these new facilities.

A Hirkani Room has already been made operational on the first floor of the Zilla Parishad headquarters, benefiting women visiting from various parts of the district. Authorities observed that many women visiting the Zilla Parishad often bring their infants but struggle to find a safe and comfortable space for breastfeeding. Recognizing this need, the Chief Executive Officer directed the establishment of a Hirkani Room at the headquarters.

Following this initiative, the project will now be expanded in a phased manner:
Phase 1: Hirkani Rooms will be set up in 13 Panchayat Samiti offices.
Phase 2: The facility will be introduced in 108 primary health centers across the district.
The Women and Child Welfare Department has designed these rooms to be installed in open spaces adjacent to primary health centers, ensuring accessibility and convenience for women.
