HMPV: Maharashtra Health Department Issues Advisory Amid Rise in Human Metapneumovirus Cases
Mumbai, 6th January 2025: With a noticeable increase in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections reported in China, the Maharashtra state health department has released a precautionary advisory to raise awareness about the respiratory virus. The Union health ministry has also assured the public that it is closely monitoring global developments and is in regular communication with the World Health Organization (WHO).
HMPV, a respiratory virus known to cause infections resembling the common cold, poses the greatest risk to young children, elderly individuals, and people with compromised immune systems, particularly during colder months. While it is typically mild, the virus can lead to severe complications for those with weakened immunity.
“Human Metapneumovirus is not new to India, but we often don’t test for it unless a patient is severely impacted due to the high cost of testing, which can range between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000,” said Dr. Lancelot Pinto, a pulmonologist at PD Hinduja Hospital. He emphasized that awareness and early identification are crucial for managing the infection effectively.
The advisory urges citizens to adopt preventive measures such as covering their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, washing hands frequently with soap, and avoiding crowded public places if they exhibit symptoms like fever, cough, or breathing difficulties.
As the virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets, health experts have highlighted the importance of following basic hygiene practices to reduce transmission. The state health department has also assured that healthcare facilities are prepared to handle potential cases and has encouraged individuals to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
While no significant outbreaks have been reported in India, health authorities are maintaining vigilance and have advised the public to stay informed about updates related to HMPV.
