The Significance of Army Day
The tradition of Army Day began in 1949 to honor Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, who became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, taking over from British leadership. For decades, the Army Day Parade was exclusively held in Delhi, where it showcased the might and heritage of the nation’s armed forces.
In 2023, this tradition shifted when the parade moved out of Delhi for the first time and was held in Bengaluru. This change marked the beginning of a new era of inclusivity, bringing the celebration closer to citizens across India. Lucknow hosted the event in 2024, and Pune now continues the legacy as the host city for 2025.
Why Pune?
Known for its rich military history, Pune is a hub of India’s defence landscape. It is home to the Southern Command headquarters, as well as premier institutions like the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the College of Military Engineering (CME). Hosting the Army Day Parade in Pune is a tribute to the city’s pivotal role in the country’s defence sector.
What to Expect at the Parade
This year’s parade promises to be a grand affair with:
Marching Contingents: Representing various regiments of the Indian Army.
Mechanized Columns: Featuring tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery.
Technological Exhibits: Displaying cutting-edge defence technologies, including drones and robotics.
Demonstrations: Martial arts displays, combat techniques, and other thrilling performances.
A Celebration for Everyone
Ahead of the parade, Pune is also hosting the “Know Your Army” exhibition at the Race Course on Solapur Road. The exhibition is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm till 5th January without any registration. This interactive event provides residents an opportunity to explore advanced weaponry and meet soldiers who safeguard the nation. By decentralizing the Army Day celebrations, the Indian Army aims to foster a deeper connection with citizens and inspire a greater sense of pride and unity.
This year’s Army Day Parade is not just a ceremonial event but a national celebration of courage, dedication, and innovation. Don’t miss your chance to witness this spectacular display of India’s military prowess and heritage.
