Pune, 4th January 2025: After experiencing a sharp drop in minimum temperatures, Pune is now expected to see a significant rise in night temperatures in the coming days. On Friday, the minimum temperature plunged to 11.7°C in Shivajinagar and the National Defence Academy (NDA) areas, signaling a firm winter chill. However, meteorologists have predicted a rise of nearly seven degrees, with minimum temperatures likely to reach 18°C soon.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a drop of 1-3°C in minimum temperatures was observed across regions like Madhya Maharashtra and Telangana. However, a reversal is expected as central India, including parts of Maharashtra, braces for a rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C over the next few days.

“A western disturbance currently positioned as a cyclonic circulation over eastern Iran is influencing temperature patterns,” an IMD official explained. “This disturbance, combined with easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, which are warmer and more humid, will result in warmer nights for Pune in the coming days. The western disturbance is also likely to block cold and dry northerly winds from reaching Maharashtra.”

The official added that once the western disturbance passes, colder and drier air could return, bringing another dip in minimum temperatures.

Friday’s weather data highlighted the stark differences in minimum temperatures across Pune. While Shivajinagar and NDA recorded 11.7°C, Magarpatta’s minimum temperature was significantly higher at 18.6°C, underscoring the varied climatic conditions within the city.

This winter has already shown notable temperature fluctuations in Pune. For instance, Shivajinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 15.3°C on December 31, which dropped by nearly four degrees to 11.7°C by January 3. Similar patterns were seen in other parts of the city, with Chinchwad’s minimum temperature falling from 19.7°C to 17.7°C, and NDA’s temperature dropping from 13.9°C on December 31 to match Shivajinagar’s 11.7°C.

As Pune gears up for warmer nights, residents can expect relief from the biting cold of recent days. However, meteorologists warn that these swings are typical during the winter season, especially with changing wind patterns and weather disturbances. Once the current western disturbance passes, temperatures may dip again, bringing another chilly phase to the city.

For now, Puneites can enjoy a brief respite from the cold while keeping an eye on the ever-changing mercury.
