Hydrogen-Fuel Bus Trial Begins in Pune as City Explores Greener Transport Options
Aundh, 16th October 2025: In a step towards promoting cleaner mobility, a hydrogen-fuelled bus was tested on Pune’s roads on Wednesday under the Central Government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The trial, which will continue for the next seven days, aims to assess the feasibility of introducing hydrogen-powered buses into the city’s public transport network.
Hydrogen buses are already operational in Delhi and Vadodara, and Pune has now joined the list of cities exploring this eco-friendly alternative. The trial is being conducted jointly by the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MAHAURJA), Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), Tata Motors, and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).
The test run was carried out on the roads of Aundh in the presence of Anand Raydurga, General Manager (Project Department), MAHAURJA, and Pankaj Deore, Chairman and Managing Director, PMPML, along with officials from the partnering organizations.
“At the national level, due to fluctuating fuel prices and increasing carbon emissions, the government is actively exploring alternative energy solutions. As part of this initiative, the hydrogen bus will be tested on busy city roads and highways over the next week. Officials from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), MAHAURJA, Regional Transport Office (RTO), and Tata Motors will monitor the trial. Any technical issues identified will be rectified before taking further decisions,” said Anand Raydurga, General Manager (Project Department), MAHAURJA.
If successful, the trial could pave the way for Pune’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered buses, marking a significant milestone in the city’s journey toward sustainable public transportation.
