Wagholi, 16th October 2025: Citing the worsening situation in Wagholi related to waste management, water supply, drainage, and roads, Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram announced that he will write to the state government requesting that the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) be directed not to grant new construction permissions in the area until adequate infrastructure is developed.

The Commissioner visited several parts of Wagholi on Wednesday (October 16) to assess civic issues firsthand. Following the inspection, he acknowledged the severe infrastructure shortcomings and expressed concern over PMRDA’s planning and monitoring in the region. “Wagholi is the dirtiest place in Pune”, he said.

During his visit, local residents voiced their grievances about the poor state of civic amenities. Some even tried to stop the Commissioner’s vehicle to draw attention to their day-to-day struggles. Despite rapid urbanization and large-scale housing projects, Wagholi continues to face acute civic neglect.

Before the area was merged with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the PMRDA had been granting multiple construction approvals.

Developers were required to establish Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for their housing societies rather than connecting to a central drainage network. However, due to the lack of proper planning for the reuse or disposal of treated water, many societies have been releasing untreated or partially treated wastewater into open spaces, posing serious environmental and health risks.

Apart from drainage, roads, garbage collection, and water supply remain major issues for residents. Taking note of the situation, the Commissioner assured locals that the PMC will work toward finding lasting solutions and that a formal communication will soon be sent to the state government to halt new approvals until the necessary civic infrastructure is in place.
