Pune, 28th February 2026: The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune (IISER Pune) marked National Science Day 2026 today, February 28, with a series of scientific programmes and public engagement activities on its campus, highlighting the role of women in science and promoting scientific temper among students and the wider public.

National Science Day is observed annually on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by renowned Indian physicist C. V. Raman in 1928. For this seminal contribution to science, Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, becoming the first Indian scientist to receive the honour.

Aligned with the theme announced by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India — “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat” — IISER Pune hosted invited lectures by eminent women scientists, who shared insights into their research work as well as their professional journeys in the field of science. A special demonstration-lecture by Padma Shri awardee and noted science communicator Arvind Gupta was also organised, focusing on innovation and the importance of effective science communication in education.

The scientific programme featured lectures on a range of contemporary themes, including reflections on the meaning and practice of research, recent advances in biological and molecular sciences, bio-inspired systems and motors, data-driven approaches to school-level experimentation, and discussions on the contributions and challenges of women in science.

In addition to academic sessions, the celebrations included interactive science shows and hands-on demonstrations aimed at engaging the general public. Activities included experiments in science and mathematics, science toy demonstrations, grand science shows, and sessions exploring the scientific explanations behind so-called “miracles.” An exhibition showcasing science models developed by students, teachers and IISER Pune staff was also organised. Visitors participated in daytime astronomy observations, interactive puzzle sessions and a science quiz.

A live online quiz titled “The Mysteries of the Universe” was conducted through the Science Activity Centre’s YouTube channel, with prizes announced for winners.

Outreach programme at PCMC Science Park

As part of its National Science Day outreach, IISER Pune, in collaboration with Pimpri Chinchwad Science Park, is organising a three-day outreach programme from February 27 to March 1, 2026, at the Kalpakghar Community Tinkering Centre located at the PCMC Science Park.

The outreach programme includes STEM-focused activities such as a Weather Hackathon for teachers and students, exhibitions of STEM models and hackathon projects, STEM art displays, and hands-on tinkering demonstrations. Interactive zones featuring string art, pixel art, pen plotters and puzzles have also been set up. The programme further includes popular science lectures, STEM film screenings and a hands-on workshop.

Commitment to science outreach

IISER Pune is a research-intensive institute committed to excellence in science and mathematics education and research. The institute has consistently focused on outreach initiatives to foster scientific temper and extend scientific knowledge beyond academic settings.

Through workshops for students and teachers, public lectures, science exhibitions and community engagement programmes, IISER Pune continues to strengthen science communication and foundational science education. The institute said that advancing women in science remains a year-round priority through equitable opportunities, mentorship, leadership development and an inclusive campus culture, making the National Science Day 2026 theme an extension of its sustained institutional efforts.
