IISER Scientist Dies After Assault by Neighbor Over Parking Dispute in Mohali

Mohali, 13th March 2025: A 39-year-old scientist from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) lost his life following an altercation with his neighbor over a parking issue in Sector 66, Mohali, on Tuesday night.
The deceased, Abhishek Swarnkar, originally from Jharkhand, had returned to India after working abroad due to health concerns. He had recently undergone a kidney transplant and was undergoing dialysis. His family revealed that one of his two married sisters had donated a kidney to him.
Swarnkar lived in a rented home with his elderly parents, who have accused their neighbor, Monty, an IT professional, of physically assaulting him despite being aware of his delicate health condition. The entire incident was captured on CCTV.
According to police reports, the confrontation started around 8:30 pm and quickly escalated. Eyewitnesses recounted that Monty initially hurled verbal abuse at Swarnkar before physically attacking him.
“I heard shouting and rushed outside. I saw Monty hitting Abhishek, repeatedly punching him in the chest as he lay on the ground,” said Roma, a local resident. “When Abhishek lost consciousness, Monty realized the gravity of the situation and rushed him to a hospital.”
On the way to the hospital, Monty reportedly collided with another vehicle. Upon arrival at a private medical facility, doctors declared Swarnkar dead.
Station House Officer (SHO) Gagandeep Singh confirmed on Wednesday that a case has been registered based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family. Further investigation is underway.
