Illegal Waste Segregation Unit Threatens Health of Students in Pisoli, Residents Raise Alarm

Pune, May 27, 2025: An illegal waste management and segregation activity operating in close proximity to Hill Green High School in Pisoli has sparked serious health and safety concerns among residents and parents. The unit, hidden behind the school’s boundary wall, has reportedly been functioning for a considerable period without any official oversight or intervention.
According to a concerned resident, who is also a parent of a student at the school, the waste segregation operation poses a significant threat to the well-being of students, school staff, and local residents—especially with the onset of the monsoon season and fears of another coronavirus outbreak.
“The location is not easily visible from the main road, which may explain why it has continued without scrutiny. But the impact on our health and environment is very real and immediate,” said the resident in a letter to the editorial team of Punekar News. The letter also notes that the school authorities have failed to act on the matter, despite being alerted through an anonymous complaint two months ago.
Photos of the site, reportedly taken in March, show piles of waste materials being processed dangerously close to the school premises. The presence of such operations near an educational institution raises serious questions about enforcement of waste management laws and civic safety regulations.
“Many residents feel intimidated and hesitant to raise their voices directly. We are left with no choice but to appeal to the media to take up this matter so the authorities are compelled to act,” the resident added.
Despite multiple public health risks—including the spread of vector-borne diseases during the rains—the concerned unit continues to operate unchecked. Locals are now demanding that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and other relevant agencies immediately investigate the issue and permanently shut down the illegal operation.
Punekar News has reached out to Hill Green High School and local officials for their comments. This report will be updated with their response.
