Spain, 27th July 2023: The Indian men’s hockey team clashed with the recently crowned FIH Hockey Pro League 2022-23 champions, the Netherlands, in a thrilling match at the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation – International Tournament, resulting in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
After a setback in their opening game against Spain, India displayed a remarkable comeback on Wednesday. Their in-form captain, Harmanpreet Singh, struck an impressive goal in the 12th minute, giving India an early lead. However, the Netherlands’ Jasper Brinkman managed to equalize the score with a well-executed goal in the 40th minute.
India started the game in an attacking mode, creating numerous chances in the circle and securing an early lead through a penalty corner. While the Dutch side also earned a penalty corner in the match, they couldn’t capitalize on it.
In the second quarter, both teams had their opportunities with penalty corners, but India’s goalkeeper Krishan Pathak and Dutch goalie Mauritius Visser made brilliant saves, preventing any further goals.
During the third quarter, both teams continued to battle, and both earned penalty corners but couldn’t find the back of the net. The experienced drag-flicker Jasper Brinkman finally broke the deadlock for the Netherlands, levelling the scores with an impressive conversion from a penalty corner.
In the dying moments of the third quarter, India launched an excellent counter-attack led by Harmanpreet, but they couldn’t breach the Dutch defence to penetrate the circle.
The tension remained high in the fourth quarter as both teams pushed for a decisive lead. Despite creating several chances, neither side could convert, resulting in a final score of 1-1.
