Pune: Leopard Rescued Safely After Roaming In Koregaon Bhima

Wagholi, 27th July 2023: A leopard that had been roaming in the populated area for the past week found itself locked inside a factory’s toilet by local villagers. Swift action from the forest department staff led to the successful capture of the leopard in a cage, bringing relief to the people of Koregaon Bhima, about 30 km from Pune city.

The leopard had been lingering near a cowshed near Anand Park in Koregaon Bhima since Wednesday afternoon (26th July). The presence of the leopard had caused panic among the villagers, but fortunately, it did not attack anyone.

On Thursday morning, the villagers spotted the leopard sitting behind a pick-up jeep near the ‘Sansar’ company. Observing its movements, the villagers suspected that the leopard might be ill. With courage and assistance from some locals, including Anil Kashid, the district deputy chief of Shiv Sena, Santosh Salunkhe, Adv. Pratap Salunkhe, Kiran Salunkhe, and Siddharth Kashid, the leopard was coaxed into a room and secured by blocking the room’s entrance.

The incident was reported to Shirur Forest Range Officer Pratap Jagtap, who swiftly arrived at the scene with the rescue team, consisting of Gauri Hingane, forest guards Baban Dahatonde, Abhijit Satpute, forest laborer Ananda Hargude, Sherkhan Sheikh, Amol Kusalkar, and Khandu Chakor. The team observed that the leopard appeared to be sick. To ensure the safety of the animal, they locked it in a cage and took it to the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Center in Junnar for recovery.
