New Delhi, 22nd May 2025: India has officially emerged as the world’s second-largest road network holder, overtaking China, France, and Brazil, according to recent estimates. With an expansive network measuring approximately 6.37 million kilometers as of 2021, India now trails only the United States in global road infrastructure.
The United States remains at the top with a road network of 6.58 million kilometers, followed by India. China ranks third with an estimated 5.2 million kilometers (2020 data), while Brazil, Russia, and Japan follow with significantly smaller networks — 2 million km, 1.28 million km, and 1.21 million km respectively.
India’s rapid road expansion reflects sustained investment in infrastructure aimed at enhancing connectivity, trade, and rural accessibility. Key government programs like Bharatmala and PM Gati Shakti, led by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, have played a pivotal role in modernizing highways and rural roads alike.
As the country continues its path toward urbanization and industrial growth, robust road infrastructure is expected to remain a foundational pillar of economic development and regional integration.
