India: Central Government Takes Precautionary Measures Amidst New Respiratory Disease Outbreak in China
New Delhi, 27th November 2023: In response to a recent outbreak of a respiratory disease affecting children in China, the central government of India has initiated precautionary measures to safeguard public health. On Sunday, all Indian states and Union Territories were directed to conduct an immediate review of the preparedness of public health facilities. The Union Health Ministry has assured the public that the situation in China is under close observation, and there is no need for panic.
Following the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, a new respiratory disease has emerged, particularly impacting children in China. Numerous countries, including India, have taken proactive steps to address this emerging health concern. The Union Health Ministry has issued guidelines for a comprehensive review of health measures, considering the ongoing influenza season and the rise in respiratory disorders associated with winter.
States and Union Territories in India have been advised to ensure that district and state departments engaged in integrated disease surveillance projects closely monitor the increase in respiratory infections. Special attention is recommended for young children and infants who may be more vulnerable to respiratory illnesses. The Union Health Ministry has also urged the submission of samples of nasal and throat secretions from patients with respiratory disorders to state laboratories for testing for respiratory disorder genes.
A respiratory disease outbreak among children has been reported in northern China, prompting India to seek information from Chinese authorities about the nature and extent of the disease. Citizens in China are advised to use masks as a preventive measure against respiratory diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the importance of vaccination, urging governments to prioritize immunization efforts.
The central government has outlined key areas of focus, including:
1. Availability of manpower in hospitals.
2. Provision of sufficient beds in healthcare facilities.
3. Stockpiling essential supplies, including medicines and vaccines for influenza, medical oxygen, and antibiotics.
4. Inspection of oxygen generation plants.
5. Performance testing of ventilators.
6. Emphasis on infection control methods.
