New Delhi, 17th May 2025: India is making significant strides in earthquake preparedness as part of its broader vision for a developed nation by 2047. The Ministry of Earth Sciences has spearheaded efforts to strengthen the country’s seismic monitoring infrastructure and early warning capabilities.
More than 2500 seismic events recorded –
According to Ministry of Earth Science, 49 new earthquake observatories have been added between 2020 and 2024, bringing the total number of monitoring stations to 166 across the nation. These enhancements have enabled the detection and recording of approximately 2,700 seismic events from January 2020 to March 2025.
Early Earthquake Warning (EEW) systems are being piloted in high-risk seismic zones, offering communities vital seconds to respond during tremors. Additionally, India is actively sharing seismic data with international partners, including the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the International Seismological Centre (ISC), reinforcing its commitment to global cooperation in disaster risk reduction.
These advancements mark a confident step toward a safer, more resilient India under the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ initiative.
