India Introduces Pre-Flight Exercise Initiative For Passengers at Airports
New Delhi, 7th January 2025: In a pioneering move to enhance passenger well-being, the Union Health Ministry has launched a new initiative requiring passengers to engage in light physical exercises at airports before boarding their flights. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been tasked with implementing this voluntary program aimed at promoting a healthier travel experience.
As per the Health Ministry’s directive, passengers will be encouraged to perform stretching exercises for two to three minutes at the boarding gate. CISF personnel stationed at airports will guide the exercises. However, participation is entirely voluntary, and passengers can opt out if they choose.
The initiative is designed to combat issues such as muscle stiffness and poor blood circulation, common during air travel. It also aims to reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and alleviate tension in key muscle groups such as the hamstrings, hips, shoulders, and neck.
The program was trialed at Jodhpur Airport on 5th January, where CISF personnel led passengers through basic stretching exercises to ensure a more comfortable travel experience. Officials claim that this initiative is the first of its kind globally.
Passengers often experience boredom and fatigue while waiting at boarding gates. This program is expected to make this waiting time more productive and enjoyable. The government has also encouraged airlines to incorporate and expand this initiative to maximize its benefits.
CISF personnel have been trained in six types of stretches, including side stretches, horizontal stretches, vertical stretches, and calf muscle exercises, ensuring a comprehensive approach to passenger comfort and health.
