India Post Payment Bank to become operational by March 2017
  
Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad today said India Post has a potential to become world’s leading e-Commerce Delivery platform. While inaugurating the e-Commerce Parcel Processing Centre in Parel, Mumbai, Shri Prasad said India Post has aligned itself with latest technological developments in the country. 
 
Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad informed that the parcel revenue which registered a 2% decline in 2013-14, registered 37% growth in 2014-15.  It grew by 117% during the first half of FY 2015-16.
 
India Post has tied up with more than 400 eCommerce agencies including Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal etc for delivering eCommerce pre-paid as well as Cash-on-Delivery orders.  Amazon is the largest business partner of India Post’s eCommerce Division.
 
India Post posted a total revenue of Rs 11,636 crores during 2014-15, with post and parcel related services accounting for 42% of the revenue and the rest coming from the Savings Bank activities.
 
The Minister further said that India Post Payment Bank would be set up by March 2017 to extend access to formal banking in rural areas.  All the rural post offices would get hand held devices to facilitate banking insurance business and contribution in propagating the government schemes.
 
About eCommerce Parcel Processing Centre
E-Commerce Parcel Processing Centre at Parel, Mumbai is spread over 12,000 Sq. feet and is fully mechanized and computerized using conveyer belts, scanners and computers and electronic weighing scales etc. It has also been provided with a dedicated transport facility to dispatch parcel bags to Mumbai Airport. Presently on experimental basis around 7,000 e-Commerce parcels per day are getting processed. The hub has an installed capacity to handle 30,000 e-Commerce parcels in a day in three shifts.
 
Speedy delivery is ensured through 4 dedicated mechanized nodal delivery centres covering 21 delivery post offices functioning in Mumbai. Soon remaining post offices in Mumbai would also be covered under mechanized nodal delivery system. Parcels would also be delivered on Sundays / Holidays.  Customers can track their parcels online on India Post web site www.indiapost.gov.in.
 
Shri Ashok Kumar Das,  Chief Postmaster General Maharashtra Circle, Shri V.K. Gupta, PMG (Mail), Shri Rakesh Kumar, PMG (Business Department), Shri Ranjit Kumar, PMG (Mumbai Region) and senior officials were present on the occasion.
