Indian Engineer at Google NYC Sparks Buzz by Revealing Monthly Expenses Abroad
New York, 4th August 2025: Maitri Mangal, a New York-based Indian software engineer working at Google, has become a viral sensation after publicly sharing a detailed account of her monthly expenses in the United States. Her revelation has reignited online discussions around the high cost of living in global cities, especially for young Indian professionals working abroad.
In a widely circulated reel featuring podcaster Kushal Lodha, Mangal disclosed that her monthly expenditure touches nearly USD 5,000 (approximately ₹4.2 lakh). A significant portion, around USD 3,000 (₹2.5 lakh), is allocated solely for rent. The remaining expenses range between USD 1,000–2,000 (₹85,000–₹1.7 lakh), covering food, entertainment, and day-to-day needs. Transportation, she adds, costs an additional USD 100–200 (₹8,500–₹17,000) monthly.
What’s drawn particular attention is Mangal’s background. Unlike many Indian tech professionals who hail from prestigious IITs or IIMs, she pursued her Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Binghamton University in New York. Prior to joining Google in late 2022, she was employed at Bloomberg as a software engineer.
Mangal’s estimated annual salary package falls between USD 150,000 and 200,000 (roughly ₹1.2 crore to ₹1.6 crore). While the numbers reflect a lucrative career in Big Tech, her viral video underscores the financial challenges that persist despite a high income, particularly in a city like New York.
Beyond her corporate role, Maitri has established herself as a tech content creator, boasting over 174,000 Instagram followers. She actively shares insights on software careers, coding, and life in the U.S. through her social media platforms, including her self-titled YouTube channel.
Her candid narrative has struck a chord with many aspiring techies and NRIs, offering a glimpse into the realities of working in elite tech firms while managing life in one of the world’s most expensive cities.
