India’s Foreign Policy Aims at Strategic Autonomy, Says Jaishankar in Pune
Pune, 20th December 2025: India today is defined by its talent and skills, with Indian professionals earning global recognition for their work ethic and technological expertise, said Dr. S. Jaishankar, Union Minister for External Affairs.
Dr. Jaishankar was speaking at the 22nd Convocation Ceremony of Symbiosis International (Deemed University), held at the university’s Lavale campus in Pune on Saturday. He attended the event as the chief guest, while Prof. Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, Founder and President of Symbiosis and Chancellor of Symbiosis International (Deemed University), presided over the function.
Addressing the graduating students, Dr. Jaishankar congratulated them on reaching a significant academic milestone and reflected on the transformation witnessed by India and the world over the past decades. “Those graduating today have a wider knowledge base, far greater confidence, and a very different skill set. You are the generation that carries the responsibility of taking India to the next level,” he said.
Highlighting the impact of globalisation, Dr. Jaishankar noted that while it has expanded opportunities and horizons, it also requires a deeper understanding of global challenges and risks. He emphasised that the world has become increasingly interconnected and that young professionals will operate in workplaces that are more global in nature.
Speaking on India’s foreign policy, Dr. Jaishankar underlined the importance of strategic autonomy and safeguarding national interests.
“Our foreign policy seeks to maximise freedom of choice and autonomy in decision-making, while working with partners on mutually agreed agendas,” he said.
In his presidential address, Prof. Dr. S. B. Mujumdar stressed the importance of holistic development and outlined three guiding principles for a meaningful life: innovation with courage, compassion for those less fortunate, and passion in one’s pursuits. He encouraged students to stay connected with their alma mater, describing the university as their second home. “You have two mothers — one who gave you birth, and the other that nurtured your mind and character. Always remain connected with your university,” he said.
Prof. Mujumdar also expressed happiness over the presence of international students on campus, describing them as ambassadors of goodwill. “Our international students represent Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in action and carry the message of harmony and global unity,” he added.
Other dignitaries present at the ceremony included Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro Chancellor; Dr. R. Raman, Vice Chancellor; Dr. Rajiv Yeravdekar, Provost, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences; and Dr. M. S. Sejul, Registrar, Symbiosis International (Deemed University).
