Intern Doctors Protest Over Stipend Delay at BJMC Pune
Reported by Siddhi Patil
Pune, 15th July 2025: Intern doctors at B.J. Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital in Pune have launched a protest against the college administration over the non-payment of their stipends for the past three months.
The interns from the 2020 batch began their protest on July 15, 2025, after repeated follow-ups with the administration failed to yield any results. They claim to have been performing their duties with discipline despite not receiving their monthly stipend since April 5, 2025.
According to the interns, they have been given only false assurances, and no action has been taken to resolve the issue. Allegations have also been made about administrative negligence, including the absence of responsible staff, delays in CMP (Central Monitoring Platform) form submission, miscommunication regarding attendance, and the mistreatment of student representatives.
The Association of State Medical Internship (ASMI) Maharashtra has extended its full support to the protesting interns. In an official letter addressed to the Dean of BJMC and Sassoon Hospitals, ASMI stated that it stands in solidarity with the interns and will support any decision they take, including continuing the strike.
ASMI has outlined three key demands:
Immediate release of all pending stipends.
Implementation of a transparent and timely stipend disbursement process.
Assurance that no punitive actions will be taken against interns participating in the protest.
The interns have also urged the administration to take swift action to prevent further disruption to hospital services and to address the interns’ grievances seriously.
The dean of the college and hospital did not respond for his comments.
The matter has been brought to the attention of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai, and the Education Minister of Maharashtra.
