IPL 2023: Chennai Defeats Delhi By 77 Runs; Secures Position In Playoffs
New Delhi, 20th May 2023: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 77 runs in the 66th match of the IPL 2023 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Chennai had set a challenge of 224 runs for victory against Delhi. But CSK bowled out Delhi for 146 runs. Chennai won the match by 77 runs and reached the play-offs in style.
Along with this victory, CSK secured 17 points and sealed their ticket to the playoffs. Currently, Chennai is in the second position. If Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lose to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) today, Chennai will host defending champions Gujarat at home on 23rd May.
Delhi Capitals got off to a poor start in their chase of 224 runs set by Chennai Super Kings. Opener Prithvi Shaw fell prey to Tushar Deshpande for five runs. Philip Salt went back to the pavilion after adding three runs. He was dismissed by Deepak Chahar. Deepak, on the very next ball, took the wicket of Rilee Rossouw.
Captain David Warner saved the innings when Delhi was 26 for three wickets. He batted aggressively and took Delhi to 75 runs in the 11th over. But his supporter Yash Dhool was dismissed for 13 runs. Axar Patel, who came after that, scored a century for Delhi by playing aggressive shots. But after scoring 15 runs in eight balls, Deepak Chahar showed him the way to the pavilion. Meanwhile, Warner, who completed his half-century, reached 70.
David Warner hit 86 runs off 58 balls to take Delhi past 140 runs. But on the other side, the captain did not get any support. In the end, Chennai sealed their play-off ticket by restricting Delhi to 146 for nine wickets in 20 overs.
