Pune, 24th October 2022: On the 25th of October 2022, Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Public Outreach Programme, in collaboration with the Center for Science Education and Communication (CSEC), Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), have organized an outreach programme at the Pune University Sports ground for the safe viewing of the Partial Solar Eclipse that will be seen a few hours before sunset.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, thereby blocking the Earth’s view of the Sun, totally or partially. Astro-enthusiasts in India will be able to see the Sun, looking like a Crescent in the Sky – a Diya shape right during Diwali!

In this solar eclipse, which will be seen only as a partial type, a part of the Sun will be obscured by the moon. This beautiful phenomenon can be viewed from all over the country. The maximum visibility is in the northern states. Pune will see the Sun only 23% covered by the Moon.

The Partial Solar Eclipse can be safely viewed by using solar eclipse goggles or using telescopes with solar filters under the guidance of experts in the field. The IUCAA-CSEC team will be available for open discussions and various questions related to eclipses with the motive of debunking the myths that prevail about eclipses.

IUCAA SciPOP will simultaneously conduct live streaming of this beautiful phenomenon. It will also feature live footage from its teams in Hingoli, Guhagar, Ratnagiri, Lonar and IUCAA, Pune, along with other live views from Hanle (IIAp, Ladakh), Nainital (ARIES). The online stream will include an introduction about eclipses and the safety measures needed while viewing them, along with short popular talks and discussions with researchers of IUCAA. It will show live webcasts of the eclipse from various locations, including the maximum eclipse.

Note: Telescope viewing will depend upon the weather and sky conditions and may be cancelled at the last moment.
