Jishnu Dev Varma Named Maharashtra Governor; Major Changes in Several States
New Delhi/Mumbai, 5th March 2026: Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra as part of a major reshuffle of Governors and Lieutenant Governors announced by the President of India on Thursday.
According to a press communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President has appointed Dev Varma, who is currently serving as the Governor of Telangana, to take over as the Governor of Maharashtra. The appointments will come into effect from the dates when the appointees assume charge of their respective offices.
The announcement was part of a broader set of changes in Raj Bhavans across the country. In another key decision, Shiv Pratap Shukla, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed as the Governor of Telangana.
Meanwhile, Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the Governor of Nagaland, while Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (Retired) will take over as the Governor of Bihar.
In another development, R. N. Ravi, currently the Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the Governor of West Bengal following the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose. The President has accepted Bose’s resignation, the communique stated.
Additionally, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the Governor of Kerala, will discharge the functions of the Governor of Tamil Nadu until further arrangements are made.
Among other appointments, Kavinder Gupta, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, will take over as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
Officials said the new appointees will assume charge in their respective offices in the coming days.
