Judges Inquiry Committee Submits Report on Justice Yashwant Varma to Lok Sabha Speaker
New Delhi, 18th May 2026: The Judges Inquiry Committee, constituted to investigate allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, has submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today, according to a press release issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
Presiding Officer of Judges Inquiry Committee Justice Aravind Kumar, Supreme Court of India alongwith Justice Shree Chandrashekhar,
Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; and B.V. Acharya, Senior Advocate, Karnataka High Court presenting the Report of Judges Inquiry Committee to Honble Speaker, Lok Sabha in Parliament House.
The report was presented in accordance with the provisions of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, and will be laid before both Houses of Parliament in due course, the release stated. The three-member committee was originally constituted by Speaker Om Birla on August 12, 2025.
Background of the Case
The inquiry stemmed from a fire incident on March 14, 2025, at Justice Varma’s official residence in Delhi, where firefighters reportedly discovered large quantities of burnt and unaccounted ₹500 currency notes in a storeroom. The episode triggered an in-house probe by a Supreme Court-appointed committee, which reportedly found evidence warranting further action. This led to impeachment motions in Parliament and the formation of the statutory Judges Inquiry Committee under the 1968 Act.

Justice Varma, who was transferred to the Allahabad High Court, consistently denied the allegations, describing them as a conspiracy. He tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on April 9, 2026, with immediate effect, citing personal reasons while withdrawing from the inquiry proceedings.
Following the resignation, the committee is understood to have formally concluded its proceedings in mid-to-late April 2026, determining that further action was not required as the matter had become infructuous. It reportedly decided to forward a report to the Lok Sabha recording this position.
