Kapil Sharma’s Old ‘Parents Kabaddi’ Joke Resurfaces Amid Ranveer Allahbadia Controversy

Mumbai, 14th February 2025: Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks on the show “India’s Got Latent,” an old joke by comedian Kapil Sharma has resurfaced, sparking debate about the boundaries of humor. The resurfacing of the “Maa baap ki kabaddi” comment from Kapil Sharma’s “Comedy Nights with Kapil” days has gone viral, drawing both criticism and defense.

The controversy began after Ranveer Allahbadia made a controversial comment on Samay Raina’s show “India’s Got Latent”, which has led to widespread backlash and police complaints. The internet swiftly condemned Allahbadia for his inappropriate and distasteful remark. Following the backlash, Samay Raina removed all episodes of “India’s Got Latent” from his YouTube channel.

In the resurfaced clip, Kapil Sharma joked about how Indians value cricket and movies, saying children will wake up early for a cricket match but not for studying. He quipped, “Cricket ka match shuru hona that 4 baje, aur phir yeh maa baap ki kabaddi dekh ke so jaate hai (the match is to start from 4 am, so they watch their parents’ kabaddi and sleep)”. Sharma later explained that he meant parents often argue with each other.

The resurfacing of Sharma’s joke has ignited discussions about what constitutes acceptable humor. Some social media users defended Sharma, with one Reddit user commenting, “Kapil is witty and smart. ‘Kabaddi’ could easily mean a fight between the parents. He left it to the audience’s interpretation”. Others, however, have criticized the joke in light of the current debate.

Ranveer Allahbadia has apologized for his remarks, stating, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry”. He admitted his comment was inappropriate and not funny, acknowledging that comedy is not his strength. Samay Raina said that his only objective was to make people laugh and have a good time.

The Mumbai Police have recorded statements from individuals, including social media influencer Apoorva Mukhija, in connection with the controversy. The Assam Police are also likely to summon all accused for questioning.
