Litchis Flood Pune’s Market Yard Amid Mango Shortage, But Prices Take a Hit Due to Unseasonal Rains

Pune, 26th May 2025: With the mango season disrupted by unseasonal rains, litchis have taken centre stage at Pune’s Market Yard. The vibrant red fruit has flooded the wholesale market, drawing attention from both vendors and customers. However, while the supply is high, prices have taken a significant hit due to the recent unexpected rainfall.
According to vendor Imran, the litchi season kicked off around 15 days ago and is expected to last another fortnight. “The fresh lot of litchis has now started arriving from Bihar, while the earlier supplies from Kolkata have completely stopped,” he said.
Despite the visual abundance, vendors are facing losses. “Earlier, we sold 10 kg boxes for ₹2,500 to ₹3,000. Now, due to the rain, the same box sells for only ₹1,000,” Imran added. The fruit, which commands high demand during the summer, is now being retailed at ₹200 per kilogram.
Litchis typically have a short market window, and this year’s weather has compressed it even more. With just a couple of weeks left in the season, vendors are urging customers to enjoy the fruit while it lasts.
As litchis continue to brighten up the Market Yard with their colour and flavour, the hope remains that buyers will take advantage of the lower prices before the fruit disappears from the stalls for another year.
