Pune, 26th May 2025: In honor of the birth anniversary of Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, his historic room at Fergusson College in Pune will be open for public viewing on Wednesday (28th May) from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Savarkar stayed in Room No. 17 of Hostel No. 1 at Fergusson College between 1902 and 1905 during his student days. The room stands as a testament to his revolutionary thoughts and initiatives.

On display in the room are a statue of Savarkar, two ceremonial robes from his D.Litt. degree, personal belongings, and rare photographs. It was in this very room that Savarkar planned many of his major revolutionary activities, including the burning of foreign clothes, the initiation of the Swadeshi movement, and the founding of the revolutionary organization ‘Abhinav Bharat’. He also composed iconic powadas in as Sinhagad Fort War and Baji Prabhu Deshpande here.

In 1905, following the incident of burning foreign garments, then Principal Wrangler Raghunath Paranjpye expelled Savarkar from the hostel and imposed a fine. In protest, Lokmanya Tilak wrote a strongly worded article titled “He Is Not Our Guru” in the Kesari newspaper.

The Deccan Education Society has preserved this historic room with great care. It is opened to the public on Savarkar’s birth and death anniversaries. The room continues to serve as a source of inspiration and a powerful reminder of Savarkar’s revolutionary journey.
