Lok Sabha Elections 2024: ‘Want Commitment From Politician Not To Switch Parties For Five Years’ – ‘Jagrit Punekar’ Banners in Pune
Pune, 29th March 2024: Political posters under the banner of ‘Jagrit Punekar’ in Pune have sparked significant discussion. These banners advocate voting for candidates who pledge not to switch parties for five years. Placed across various locations in old Pune city, the identity of those behind these banners remains unknown.
The text on the banners emphasizes the importance of candidates committing to remain loyal to their party and its mission for a stipulated period. It states, “Awakened Punekar, whichever party the candidate belongs to, he should mention only one thing in his introduction letter, that ‘I will be honest with our party and the party’s mission policy and voters for 5 years, I will not join any other party. If I go, don’t elect me or my family again.’ Vote for the candidate who writes this in his identity card.”
Activist Vivek Velankar from Sajjan Nagarik Manch agreed with the sentiments echoed in these banners, suggesting that they reflect public dissatisfaction with leaders who frequently switch allegiances. However, the anonymity of the individuals behind the banners raises concerns, indicating a prevailing sense of fear among the populace.
Velankar questioned why citizens should fear politicians and emphasized the importance of transparency in such initiatives.
Another activist, Vihar Durve, attributed the rampant defections in the country to fears of investigative agencies. He called for accountability from these agencies, suggesting that their actions contribute to the political climate of uncertainty and encourage opportunistic behaviour among politicians.
