Maharashtra: 8 Private Medical Colleges Seek Fee Review; FRA Allows Hikes Up to Rs 4.5 Lakh

Mumbai, 10th March 2026: Several private medical colleges in Maharashtra approached the state’s Fee Regulating Authority (FRA) seeking a review of the tuition fees fixed for the current academic year. At least eight institutions submitted appeals requesting revisions after the authority approved lower fees than those proposed in their original submissions.

According to officials, many colleges had sought significantly higher annual fees in their proposals, in some cases exceeding Rs 20 lakh.

However, the FRA initially approved only modest increases ranging from about Rs 50,000 to Rs 4.5 lakh after evaluating their financial documents.
One of the largest revisions was granted to Vedantaa Institute of Medical Sciences in Palghar for its postgraduate MD/MS programmes. The institute had originally proposed an annual fee of Rs 22 lakh when it applied for a fee revision. For the 2025–26 academic year, the FRA first approved a fee of Rs 13.11 lakh. Following a review petition by the college and recommendations from an empowered committee, the fee was later revised to Rs 17.62 lakh.

An FRA official said the revision took into account certain institutional conditions. “The college cited a government order issued when the institute was established under the Companies Act, which had to be considered. It also informed the authority that admissions had been delayed in a particular year, resulting in expenses being reflected in the following year’s accounts. After reviewing these factors, the revised fee was approved,” the official said. Even after the revision, the fee remains slightly lower than the previous academic year, when it was around Rs 18 lakh.

Another institution, Smt Kashibai Navale Medical College in Pune, also sought a review. In its appeal, the college stated that the number of staff members considered while calculating the fee structure was lower than the actual staff strength. After examining the additional documents, the authority approved a hike of around Rs 1.4 lakh from the earlier amount.

Following the revision, the annual MBBS fee at the college was increased from Rs 10.94 lakh to Rs 12.34 lakh, while the fee for MD/MS courses was revised from Rs 12.95 lakh to Rs 14.23 lakh, according to the meeting records. In its original proposal, however, the institution had sought significantly higher fees, including around Rs 22 lakh for MBBS and more than Rs 25 lakh for postgraduate courses.

Apart from these two institutions, six other medical colleges also secured fee revisions after submitting supporting documents. These include Dr NY Tasgaonkar Institute of Medical Science in Karjat, Parbhani Medical College, ACPM Medical College in Dhule, NKP Salve Medical College in Nagpur, and SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences in Igatpuri.

In the case of the Karjat-based institute, the college had proposed a fee of Rs 20 lakh but was initially allowed Rs 6.21 lakh by the FRA. After review, the fee was revised to Rs 7.65 lakh. The remaining institutions received smaller revisions, with fee increases of up to around Rs 1 lakh following the authority’s review process.
