Maharashtra Bhavan Proposed in Kargil to Support Tourists; Ladakh LG Assures Cooperation
Pune, 12th January 2026: With a large number of tourists from Maharashtra visiting Kargil and the Leh–Ladakh region every year, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has proposed the construction of a ‘Maharashtra Bhavan’ in Kargil, subject to the availability of land. Sarhad organisation’s Sanjay Nahar said the proposal has received a positive response from the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta.
Gupta, who is currently in Pune, addressed a session at a programme organised by Sarhad to explore ways to boost tourism in the Leh–Ladakh region. The event was attended by social workers and representatives from the travel and tourism sector.
Addressing concerns related to communal harmony, Gupta said that unlike the Kashmir Valley, Leh–Ladakh stands as an example of peaceful coexistence between Hindu and Muslim communities. He said the region reflects strong unity and patriotism.
On the issue of high airfares, Gupta said discussions have been held with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the rising cost of air travel. He expressed hope that air ticket prices would be regulated in the near future, making travel from cities such as Pune to Leh–Ladakh more affordable.
To strengthen tourism infrastructure, Gupta said gondola projects are being developed at two locations in Ladakh, similar to those in Gulmarg. He added that the administration is also encouraging film shootings in the region by extending logistical support and tax incentives. A film starring Salman Khan is currently being shot in Ladakh.
Gupta also said efforts are underway to promote Ladakh as a religious tourism destination. The Indus River pilgrimage, which completes 30 years this year, will be marked by the organisation of the ‘Sindhu Kumbh’.
Highlighting the significance of the Kargil War Memorial, Gupta said the memorial attracts visitors from across the country and inspires a sense of gratitude towards the armed forces. He noted that tourists from Maharashtra and Gujarat constitute the largest group of visitors to Ladakh.
“With its natural beauty, adventure tourism and spiritual importance, Leh–Ladakh has immense potential. In the coming years, it will emerge as a major global tourist destination,” Gupta said.
