Pune, 8th June 2025: The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has permitted ATKT (Allowed To Keep Term) students—those who have failed in one or two subjects—to apply for provisional admission to Class 11.

The decision comes amid concerns over low pass rates in the Class 10 exams and a surplus of vacant seats in junior colleges. Of the 2.3 million seats available across 9,500 junior colleges in Maharashtra, only 1.52 million students have cleared the SSC exams—1.38 million from the state board and around 1.4 lakh from other boards—leaving nearly 7.8 lakh seats unoccupied.

As per the revised guidelines, Maharashtra board students from the science stream who have scored at least 40% in their failed subjects are eligible for provisional admission. However, their admission will be confirmed only after they successfully clear the July supplementary exams.

Director of Education Dr. Shriram Panzade clarified that this provision is applicable only to students of the Maharashtra State Board and strictly for science stream admissions. Students from other boards are not eligible under this scheme.

Previously, only students who had passed all subjects were eligible for Class 11 admissions. The new policy offers a much-needed opportunity for ATKT students to continue their education without delay, thereby helping to reduce dropout rates and maintain academic continuity.

To facilitate the process, the education department has also released an online provisional merit list featuring student marks and state-level ranks. Admissions will be conducted in five rounds, enabling both passed and ATKT students to register and select colleges based on their merit.

The move is expected to ease pressure on the admission system, optimize the use of college infrastructure, and provide a second chance to thousands of students who narrowly missed the passing mark.
