Pune, 20th February 2024: In a significant development, Pune has been incorporated into the state’s Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccination campaign, alongside Raigad and Parbhani. The initiative, initially covering sixteen districts where JE is prevalent, has now expanded to include a total of nineteen districts.

The vaccination drive aims to target approximately 45 lakh children attending both public and private schools across the designated districts. Plans are underway to commence the campaign by the end of March.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites. While many individuals may remain asymptomatic, others may experience symptoms such as fever, headache, and vomiting. In severe cases, these symptoms may progress to disorientation, coma, and seizures.

Dr. Pravin Vedpathak, from the routine immunization section and assistant health director at the state family welfare department, confirmed the expansion of the campaign, stating, “Starting this year, we will include three additional districts in our vaccination initiative. We are set to target around 45 lakh students, and the distribution of vaccines and syringes is expected to commence by the end of March.”

This strategic expansion of the Japanese encephalitis vaccination drive demonstrates the state’s commitment to safeguarding the health of children in vulnerable districts. As preparations progress, the campaign is poised to play a crucial role in preventing the spread of JE and ensuring the well-being of the targeted population.
