Pune, 12th April 2023: In an effort to ensure the quality and safety of nutraceuticals and health supplements, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated a special enforcement campaign to ensure compliance with regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The FDA has been conducting inspections of shops selling dietary supplements and nutraceutical products in various areas of Maharashtra, including Ambegaon, Narhe, Hadapsar, and Sadashiv Peth.

The inspections are aimed at tackling non-compliance with regulations and false health claims associated with nutraceuticals and health supplements in the market.

Arjun Bhujbal, the joint commissioner of FDA (food) Pune region, stated that the FDA has found all inspected shops to have the necessary licenses and proper labeling as per the norms. However, violators found selling supplements with false and exaggerated health claims could face fines of up to Rs10 lakhs as per FSSAI regulations.

The nutraceuticals market in India, including Pune, has witnessed significant growth in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to an increase in the number of shops selling such products in major cities. The FDA’s campaign aims to ensure that consumers have access to safe and quality nutraceuticals and health supplements in the market.
