Mumbai, 16th June 2023: Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (Maharera) has announced that all real estate agents must obtain certification through specific training before September 1.

However, as of now, only 2134 candidates have registered, with 423 candidates having already taken the exam, and 405 candidates successfully passing. It is estimated that around 39 thousand real estate agents are currently operating in the state, and they are required to complete the training and obtain the certification before the September 1 deadline. Maharera issued a circular on January 10, emphasizing that failure to acquire the certificate would result in the agents being unable to work as agents after the specified date. As a reminder, Maharera has sent notifications to developers and agents, urging them to ensure their agents receive the necessary certification, including those who are already registered agents.

Agents play a crucial role in the real estate sector as they serve as a vital link between homebuyers and developers. They are often the primary point of contact for customers and provide essential information about projects. Recognizing the significance of agents in facilitating transactions, it is important for all agents to be well-versed in the key provisions of the RERA Act. Uniformity, consistency, and clarity in conveying fundamental information about regulatory provisions such as the Agreement for Sale, Allotment Letter, carpet area, defect liability period, and more are vital for customers in making informed decisions when purchasing a property. With the customers’ best interests in mind, Maharera has made the training and certification mandatory for agents.

Maharera reiterates that agents who fail to obtain the necessary certification will be prohibited from working as agents after September 1. This measure aims to ensure consumer protection and maintain high standards in the real estate sector. By requiring agents to undergo training and obtain certification, Maharera aims to uphold transparency and accountability, ultimately benefiting both homebuyers and the industry as a whole.
