Pune, 10th January 2026: The Maharashtra State Transport Department has made it clear that no further extension will be granted for the installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before 2019, even as a large number of vehicles in Pune remain non-compliant.

According to official data, over 2.5 million vehicles in Pune fall under the mandatory HSRP requirement. However, only around one million vehicle owners have completed registration, and installation has been carried out on just over 8 lakh vehicles, leaving nearly 15 lakh vehicles yet to install the tamper-proof number plates.

With a substantial backlog still pending, various transport and traffic associations have once again urged the government to reconsider its decision. They have argued that the existing timeframe is inadequate to accommodate the remaining vehicles and have sought a short extension of a few months to ensure smoother implementation.

Sources in the department said that while strict enforcement has not yet begun, partly due to the ongoing election process, the government has taken a firm stand against extending the deadline.

Officials reiterated that the HSRP installation drive is being carried out in compliance with a court directive, making adherence mandatory for all pre-2019 vehicles. The department has emphasised that vehicle owners are expected to complete the process without delay.

Transport unions have cautioned that sudden enforcement without adequate preparation could lead to inconvenience for lakhs of motorists. They have also flagged concerns related to operational capacity and public outreach, calling for a more phased approach to implementation.
