Pune, 10th March 2025: Road accidents in Maharashtra increased by over 2% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the latest Economic Survey report presented by the state government. The data reveals a concerning trend, with experts attributing the rise to inadequate road infrastructure and lax enforcement of traffic regulations.

In 2024, the state recorded 36,084 road accidents, up from 35,243 in 2023. The number of fatalities last year stood at 15,335, while 30,730 people sustained injuries. In comparison, 15,366 deaths and 29,784 injuries were reported in 2023.

Transport safety experts and activists have long warned that Maharashtra’s road accident statistics have remained persistently high due to predictable causes such as poor road conditions and weak enforcement of key safety rules.

Pune saw a rise in road accidents last year, mirroring the state-wide trend. According to Pune police data, the city recorded 1,404 accidents in 2024, resulting in 320 fatalities and 1,320 injuries. In contrast, Pune had 1,230 accidents in 2023.

Amidst the overall increase in road accidents, one positive trend emerged—accidents involving Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses recorded a decline, as noted in the Economic Survey report. However, experts insist that more needs to be done to improve road safety across the state.

With Maharashtra witnessing a steady rise in road mishaps, activists continue to urge the government to implement stricter enforcement, better urban planning, and a comprehensive road safety strategy to reduce fatalities and injuries.
