Pune, February 23, 2021: The Maharashtra government has banned the sale of the immunity booster tablet Coronil developed by Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali.

State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said that sales of Coronil would not be allowed in Maharashtra without proper certification from health organizations like WHO and IMA.

Anil Deshmukh tweeted in this regard, “The IMA has questioned the said ‘clinical trials’ of Coronil and WHO refuted the false claims made by Patanjali Ayurveda for giving any certificate regarding its effectiveness for Covid19 treatment. Launching such a drug hurriedly and being endorsed by two senior Central Union Ministers is highly deplorable. Selling of Coronil without proper certification from competent health organizations like WHO, IMA and others will not be allowed in Maharashtra.”

On Friday, two Union Ministers of Government of India, Nitin Gadkari and Dr Harsh Vardhan were present during the launch of Coronil. Now the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised many questions about the Union Health Minister’s involvement in this program.

Earlier after the launch of this medicine, it was claimed that Coronil has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be sent to 154 countries of the world. But this claim was later denied by the WHO. Since then, the controversy about medicine has started again.

Patanjali Ayurved meanwhile claimed that it has proper certification from the authorities concerned for selling and exporting products in 158 countries across the globe.

SK Tijarawala, spokesperson for Patanjali Ayurved said, “Coronil has received a Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (CoPP) from the AYUSH section of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization as per WHO certification scheme. It gives us the right to sell the product in 158 countries. Public relying on the misconception that WHO has not certified it, but WHO never certifies a product. It sets a protocol for clinical control tests on modern medical criteria. Once it is completed, DCGI and the Ministry of AYUSH give the certificate and we have those certificates. If no one has this information, we can give them the proper details.”

He also said that Coronil has been developed to deal with, prevent and treat the long-term effects of coronavirus.
